• Summary: Roger Clemens threw six sharp innings and Alex Rodriguez hit his major league-leading 44th home run as the Yankees edged the Red Sox 4-3 to pull within six games of first in the AL East and into a tie with Seattle for the wild-card lead.
• Heroes: Clemens (6-5) allowed two hits (no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings) and one run. His only blemish was a sixth-inning homer by David Ortiz, who connected for the sixth time in 11 games. Rivera got four outs for his 22nd save. • A-Bomb: Rodriguez's seventh-inning solo shot was his 508th career homer and proved to be the winning run for the Yankees. • Figure this: The 13 hits allowed by Josh Beckett were the most off a Boston pitcher since Curt Schilling also gave up 13 on April 22, 2004, at Toronto. • Quotable: "You marvel at what he's able to do on the mound.'' -- A-Rod, on Clemens. -- ESPN.com news services |
