MIAMI (AP) -- Todd Linden gave a very small crowd something to cheer about.

Linden singled in Reggie Abercrombie with two outs in the 12th inning to lift the Florida Marlins to a 5-4 victory over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.

Mike Jacobs led off the 12th with a double against Saul Rivera (4-6) and departed for pinch-runner Abercrombie. Miguel Olivo struck out before Abercrombie went to third on Robert Andino's groundout.

Linden then singled up the middle to give Florida the win.

"That baseball had eyes," Linden said. "We needed that. In that situation we needed a hit and I got it done."

There were about 400 fans on hand when the game started Wednesday afternoon and the announced attendance was 10,121. The Marlins have the smallest total attendance in the majors.

"It was a good game, but long, hot and drawn out," Jacobs said. "Finally, we got a couple hits and put it together. I'm sure there was plenty of people at home that saw it on TV."

Daniel Barone (1-2), the last of seven Florida pitchers, pitched a scoreless inning to get the his first major league win. Barone made his major league debut on Aug. 10 at New York and has mostly pitched out of the bullpen.

"It's awesome, it's exciting. I'm speechless," said Barone, who was saving the official scorecard to give to his parents. "It was one of those games where I knew everyone would get in there. We got it done."

Linden had come into the game defensively in the top of the 12th inning.

"I got the ground ball I wanted from [Linden] but he just found the right spot," Rivera said. "It just didn't go my way today."

Byung-Hyun Kim tied a career high with 10 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings for the Marlins. Kim, who had won his last three starts, gave up four runs and seven hits.

Joel Hanrahan lasted just 3 1/3 innings for Washington, which used nine pitchers. Hanrahan gave up three runs and six hits with six walks.

"It was a very disappointing effort on my part," Hanrahan said. "I tried to do too much with two outs. Today was not a very good sign for me but I just have to bounce back."

Jeremy Hermida hit a solo homer off Washington reliever Jonathan Albaladejo in the sixth to tie it at 4.

Ryan Church and Wily Mo Pena hit back-to-back homers off Kim in the fifth to give Washington a 4-3 lead. It was the third time this season the Nationals have hit consecutive homers.

Olivo's two-run homer off Hanrahan in the third inning gave Florida a 2-0 lead. It was Olivo's 16th of the season.

"We had our chances," Nationals manager Manny Acta said. "It was a well-played ballgame but we just didn't come out on top."

Game notes
Marlins SS Hanley Ramirez missed Wednesday's game to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. ... With the appearance of INF Andino in Wednesday's game, the Marlins have used 49 players this season, tying the franchise mark originally set in 1998.
