Markakis scores go-ahead run on fielding error in 10th

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- That miserable day in August can finally be put behind the Baltimore Orioles. This time, they had the big scoring outburst against Texas -- even if it was only one inning.

Playing against the Rangers for the first time since allowing an American League record 39 runs in a doubleheader on Aug. 22, Baltimore used a five-run 10th inning for a 6-3 victory Thursday night.

"You've got to live with a short memory and kind of let it go from there," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. "That's a credit to our guys, you didn't see that enter in at all today."

On the same day Trembley got a contract extension through 2008 and the interim tag removed from his title, the Rangers became the first team in 110 years to score 30 runs in a game.

Texas set an AL record in a 30-3 rout in the opener of the doubleheader at Camden Yards, then won 9-7 to complete the sweep.

"That seems like three years ago really," said Brian Roberts, whose three-run homer capped the 10th-inning outburst. "When you've been through what we've been through for the last month, that seems like forever ago. ... It wasn't hard to put that behind us."

Starting with that sweep, the Orioles lost 22 of 28 games.

Plus, Baltimore had scored only one run its previous two losses to the New York Yankees -- and were still scoreless against Texas until Miguel Tejada's pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth.

Nick Markakis scored the go-ahead run on an error in the 10th inning.

While shortstop Michael Young spun and made a nifty stop of the grounder up the middle, Markakis beat the strong throw for a leadoff infield single. After going to second on a wild pitch by John Rheinecker (3-3), who didn't retire any of the three batters he faced, Markakis scored to break a 1-1 tie when first baseman Brad Wilkerson couldn't field Aubrey Huff's grounder.

Melvin Mora added an RBI single and Roberts hit his 12th homer off Wes Littleton, but the Orioles had to hang on as Fernando Cabrera gave up two runs in the 10th.

Jamie Walker (2-2), the fifth of six Baltimore pitchers, struck out three in 1 2/3 innings.

The Orioles tied the game in the ninth when Mora led off against reliever Joaquin Benoit with a double, the first extra-base hit of the game for either team. Roberts, pinch-hitting, advanced him with a grounder before Tejada's single.

"I got two pitches in the wrong place and they hit them pretty good," Benoit said.

It was Benoit's sixth blown save in 11 chances. Left-hander C.J. Wilson, the most-often used closer since Eric Gagne was traded, got the last out in the eighth after Jamey Wright allowed only one hit over 3 2/3 innings.

"I brought C.J. in to get Huff there in the eighth. I wasn't going to use C.J. in two innings, they had three righties coming up," Rangers manager Ron Washington said.

Texas scored in the first, when leadoff hitter Ian Kinsler got hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Young's grounder.

Young was 2-for-5, giving him 192 hits -- leaving him with nine games to reach 200 hits for the fifth straight season. He had a two-out single in the 10th and scored on Marlon Byrd's single before Hank Blalock had a RBI single.

The Rangers, coming off a 2-8 trip that eliminated any possibility of them reaching .500 this season, started their final homestand.

Victor Zambrano, who became the 13th pitcher to start for Baltimore this season, allowed three hits and struck out five over five innings.

Wright took over for starter Brandon McCarthy, who was on a limited pitch count in his continued recovery from a stress fracture in his shoulder. McCarthy allowed five hits over four innings while throwing 67 pitches in his third start since 30 days on the disabled list.

Zambrano, who began this season in Toronto's bullpen, hasn't won a major league game since April 13, 2006, while with the New York Mets against Washington. ... The Rangers had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh when reliever Chad Bradford got pinch-hitter Frank Catalanotto and Young to end the threat.
