SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Brandon Phillips had been thinking of taking two bases instead of one in certain bunting situations. He got his chance on Friday night.
Phillips went from first to third on an 11th inning bunt, and
Jorge Cantu drove him in with a sacrifice fly in the
Cincinnati Reds' 9-8 victory over the
San Francisco Giants.
"Baseball is crazy," Phillips said. "With the game on the line you don't want to try and do too much. Leading off the inning all I wanted to do was get on base."
Cantu doubled three times and scored twice before coming to bat in the 11th after Phillips took advantage of third baseman
Pedro Feliz charging in on
Aaron Harang's sacrifice bunt attempt.
"I take a lot of pride when guys are in scoring position," Cantu said. "Phillips won it for us with that heads up play. That's teamwork."
Harang, who said he last pinch hit in high school, knew he'd be bunting if Phillips reached base.
"I figured I just wanted to get it down," he said. "Brandy was paying attention and saw the third baseman crashing the ball. An aggressive runner is always a step ahead."
Marcus McBeth (3-2) pitched two scoreless innings for the victory.
David Weathers pitched the 11th for his 33rd save in 39 chances.
"I come to the park prepared so there are no surprises," McBeth said. "My mindset is to take it one batter at a time and control the tempo of the game. [Extra innings] are no time to let up."
Barry Bonds was not in the lineup and not available to pinch hit for the Giants, on the day the team announced it would not be bringing the home run king back after this season.
The Reds scored five runs in the eighth inning to tie the game at 8. Joey Votto,
Javier Valentin,
Buck Coats, Phillips and
Edwin Encarnacion each drove in runs against Giants relievers
Jack Taschner and
Tyler Walker.
"It's our job," Phillips said. "What's the use of giving up? We don't want to lose. We want to get as close to .500 as we can."
Ray Durham hit a go-ahead two-run pinch-hit single in the sixth and
Omar Vizquel had four hits, including a three-run homer in the seventh for the Giants, who lost their fourth straight.
Kevin Frandsen had a career high five hits and scored four runs, and
Bengie Molina and
Dave Roberts also drove in runs to help give the Giants something to remember other than the imminent departure of their slugger.
"I'll take the 5-for-5 any day of the week," Frandsen said. "But to win a game when we had it would have meant a lot more."
Reds starter
Matt Belisle was charged with five runs -- four earned -- and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three.
Giants' starter Pat Misch was in line for his first major league victory after allowing a run and five hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out four in his third start.
Molina singled home a run in the first, Frandsen scored on a wild pitch in the second and Roberts drove in a run in the fourth to give the Giants a 3-0 lead.
David Ross hit a leadoff home run in the fifth to make it 3-1.
Encarnacion singled and Cantu, who had three hits, doubled to greet Messenger in the sixth. Votto's groundout scored one run and
Jason Ellison singled home another to tie the game at 3.
Bonds and the Giants each separately announced that his 15-year career with San Francisco will come to an end at the end of the season. Bonds missed his sixth straight game with a sprained big toe.
