SEATTLE (AP) -- Miguel Batista finished his first year with the Seattle Mariners in style.
Batista limited Texas to three hits in eight innings,
Jose Guillen went 4-for-4 and the Mariners beat the Rangers 5-1 Saturday night.
Batista (16-11) struck out five, walked two and won his third straight decision. He retired 15 of 16 batters over one stretch and allowed only one hit after the second inning.
"Batista finished the season strong," Mariners manager John McLaren said. "He had a real good year for us, innings, wins.
"He's a workhorse. Professional. Prepared. Good competitor. He's a pro's pro."
Batista, who signed a $25 million, three-year deal with Mariners in the offseason, improved 3-0 in four starts against Texas this season. The 36-year-old also passed 1,000 career strikeouts.
"You don't get paid for how old you are; you get paid to get people out," Batista said. "Look at
Jamie Moyer,
Roger Clemens,
Randy Johnson. The best pitchers in this game are over 37, Pedro (Martinez), (Curt) Schilling."
Raul Ibanez hit a solo homer and drove in two runs for Seattle, which finished with 11 hits.
The Mariners pushed across two runs in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.
Mike Morse drove in Ibanez with a bases-loaded single off
Kevin Millwood (10-14). Guillen also scored on the play when right fielder
Nelson Cruz bobbled the ball for an error.
Ibanez added his 21st homer in the seventh.
"For me personally, it was a bad year. As a team, it was a bad year," said Millwood, who finished with a career-high 14 losses. "There are some good things we can take out of it but not very much."
Sammy Sosa singled and scored on Cruz's double in the second to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.
Jason Botts singled in the fourth but that was it for Texas against Batista.
"His changeup was working very good today," Mariners catcher
Kenji Johjima said.
Guillen scored when Johjima grounded into a double play in the bottom half of the second, and Ibanez's two-out RBI single in the third made it 2-1.
Sean Green worked a perfect ninth for the Mariners, finishing off the three-hitter.
Game notes Seattle's
Ichiro Suzuki went 2-for-4 to raise his average to .351. ... Texas lost its fifth straight road game. ... Batista has 1,003 strikeouts.
