SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) -- Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn homered in the first inning Saturday off Zach Duke, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 12-11 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Griffey hit a two-run shot, his first homer of spring training. Dunn added a solo drive off Duke, who gave up six hits and five runs -- four earned -- in two innings.

Reds manager Dusty Baker rested Griffey and Dunn in the first two Grapefruit League games, giving him a chance to look at younger players.

"It's good to see them swing the bats this well, this early," Baker said.

The Pirates are hoping for a turnaround by Duke, who went 3-8 with a 5.53 ERA in 20 games last season. The left-hander was sidelined by elbow tendinitis from the end of June until mid-September.

"Duke was OK, but he obviously had trouble with left-handers," manager John Russell said. "I thought he threw the ball well overall."

Duke said the elbow has been fine so far.

"I felt healthy and that's the most important thing," he said. "I felt good out there."

Right-hander Jim Brower, trying to earn a spot in the Reds' bullpen, gave up four runs in the ninth, allowing the Pirates to pull ahead by a run. The Reds won it in the bottom of the ninth against Marino Salas, who gave up a tying double by Craig Tatum and a game-ending single by Scott Hatteberg.

Game notes
Pirates CF Nate McLouth was a late scratch from the starting lineup because of tightness in his right hamstring. He was replaced by Nyjer Morgan. The two are competing for the starting center field job. ... Pittsburgh LHP Tom Gorzelanny is scheduled to pitch one inning of relief Sunday against Tampa Bay in Bradenton after being scratched from starting the exhibition opener Thursday against Philadelphia because of shoulder soreness.
