JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- Todd Wellemeyer and Brad Thompson combined to pitch five scoreless innings for the St. Louis Cardinals in a 3-2 loss to the Florida Marlins on Saturday.
Wellemeyer, Thompson and
Anthony Reyes are competing for the final two spots in the Cardinals' rotation. Reyes won his first start Thursday with three shutout innings against the Mets.
"I made the pitches when I had to," Wellemeyer said. "I wish I would have gotten ahead of the guys a little more. I need to get ahead and stay ahead."
Wellemeyer allowed one hit and walked three in 2 2-3 innings. Thompson followed with one-hit ball, striking out three in 2 1-3 innings.
"Even if I don't make it I'll still be able to compete for that bullpen job," Thompson said.
The Marlins won despite finishing with only three hits, all singles. The Cardinals had six singles, two by
Rick Ankiel.
John Baker drove in the winning run with one out in the ninth inning. Baker's hit scored
Paul Hoover, who reached on third baseman David Freese's second error of the game. Freese's error in the seventh inning led to two Marlins runs.
"Overall, we played a pretty good game," Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We played good defense and the pitchers threw strikes."
The Cardinals scored twice in the second off starter Dallas Trahern, with
Brendan Ryan and
Adam Kennedy each hitting an RBI single. Ryan finished with two hits.
Trahern, one of the prospects acquired in the December trade that sent
Miguel Cabrera and
Dontrelle Willis to Detroit, allowed two runs, four hits and three walks in 1 2-3 innings.
