SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) -- Zack Greinke knew he was pitching well, he just didn't know most of the guys he was facing.
Greinke allowed one run and three hits in five innings, helping the
Kansas City Royals rout a
San Francisco Giants split squad 13-3 on Sunday.
"I hardly recognized any names in the entire lineup," Greinke said. "I've heard of their leadoff hitter (
Fred Lewis) and I faced (Justin) Leone in Double-A. I hadn't pitched in a `B' game, so I guess it was my time."
Most of the Giants' regulars stayed in Scottsdale for a home game against the
Los Angeles Angels.
"The big thing is I knew I was pitching well," Greinke said. "There were a couple of nice plays in the field and that just makes it a lot better because you feel like you're pitching good and then that happens, it just continues to keep the momentum going and makes you feel even better."
Greinke gave up his only run in the second on two hits and a walk. Garrett Baker singled home Daniel Ortmeier, who led off the inning with a double.
"I felt like the second inning I pitched really stupid, but after that I felt I learned a lot from that one inning," Greinke said. "Once the inning was over, I felt like I knew what I was doing wrong and felt like I changed it. Pretty much I was just thinking too much."
Greinke cited two defensive gems by right fielder
Ross Gload, and the play second baseman
Esteban German made to snag Emmanuel Burris' line drive to end the second.
"He pitched well," Royals manager Trey Hillman said. "He changed speeds so well. Watching the gun, 92-93 (mph) to sometimes 78-80. That's a good variance there as far as getting hitters off their back foot."
German led the Royals' 17-hit outburst with two hits and four RBIs, including a bases-clearing triple in the seven-run seventh.
Joey Gathright also had two hits, neither leaving the infield, and stole his seventh base.
David DeJesus snapped out of a 2-for-19 skid with two hits, including a two-run double in a five-run sixth.
Ryan Shealy also had two RBIs.
Billy Sadler, who retired just two of the nine batters he faced, took the loss. He allowed five runs, four earned, and four hits with two walks.
Left-hander
Mike Maroth got the win, although he had a rocky start. Maroth, slowed earlier in March by a stiff shoulder, gave up back-to-back doubles to Trey Webb and Travis Denker and walked three straight before retiring a batter in the Giants' two-run sixth.
"He's going to have to continue to build arm strength and hopefully the arm comes back," Hillman said.
Hillman said he is not counting on Maroth at the start of the season.
"He's just too far behind," the manager said.
