SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Whether Jon Lieber finds a spot in the Chicago rotation or ends up in the bullpen, it won't matter to him. What matters is he's healthy and pitching well.
"I'm having fun," the veteran right-hander said after allowing one run in five innings for the Cubs as a Chicago split squad beat the
San Francisco Giants 4-2 on Wednesday night. "It's been a great spring and I've tried to enjoy this year."
Lieber has fully recovered from a ruptured tendon in his right foot that ended his season last July. He was able to get back on the mound by January and is prepared for whatever role Cubs use him.
"I'm more than happy to pitch out of the bullpen," the former 20-game winner said. "The foot is no problem. Everything is normal. I don't really care where I pitch."
Lieber extended his scoreless streak to 11 innings before Daniel Ortmeier singled home
Ray Durham in the fourth inning. He hasn't allowed a run in 13 of his 15 innings. He threw 67 pitches against the Giants, giving up seven hits, walking one and striking out four.
Ronny Cedeno's two-run home run against
Kevin Correia gave the Cubs a 4-1 lead in the fifth. Micah Hoffpauir and
Geovany Soto also drove in runs for Chicago.
Correia lasted six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.
"Even when guys were getting hits they were good pitches," Correia said. "I got quite a few ground balls and that's all I can ask. Guys are going to get hits. It seems like once a game I make a bad pitch and they're right on it. I completely missed my spot (on the home run). Overall, I got my pitch count up and I thought I was pretty efficient."
Eric Patterson had two hits for the Cubs. Ortmeier,
Dave Roberts,
Rajai Davis and Durham each had two hits for the Giants.
Davis drove in the Giants' final run in the ninth.
"We were swinging the bats well," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We were missing the big hit."
Game notes The Giants optioned INFs Travis Denker and
Travis Ishikawa, RHP
Billy Sadler and OF
Nate Schierholtz to Fresno of the PCL. They also reassigned INFs Emmanuel Burriss and Ivan Ochoa and RHP
Victor Santos to minor league camp, and added INF Ryan Rohlinger as a non-rostered invitee. ... The Cubs have hit a home run in six consecutive games. ... The Cubs and Giants met for third time in spring, with the road team winning each time.
