PHOENIX (AP) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers' third base job is wide open, and each of the candidates did something good on Saturday.
Blake DeWitt doubled home a run,
Chin-Lung Hu singled and scored, and
Tony Abreu made a nice defensive play in the Dodgers' 4-2 loss to the
Los Angeles Angels.
With
Nomar Garciaparra out because of a broken bone in his right hand and Andy La Roche sidelined because of a torn ligament in his thumb, the three youngsters are vying for the starting job.
DeWitt doubled home
Russell Martin in the second to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead, but was then picked off second base.
Hu entered the game at third base in the seventh. He singled leading off the seventh and scored on
Juan Pierre's double.
Tony Abreu, also in the mix, played second and made a nice play to end the fourth with two runners on. Abreu ranged far to his right and threw across his body to nab
Casey Kotchman at first.
"He did everything," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said of Abreu. "He just needs to get at-bats. We know he has the ability to hit."
Dodgers closer
Takashi Saito gave up three runs in the seventh, including a two-run homer to
Mike Napoli.
Dodgers starter
Derek Lowe was sharp in a six-inning stint, retiring the first 10 men he faced and allowing only one unearned run. He will start once more before the season begins, but it will be a short outing.
"You're going to throw 90 pitches, so you want it to be productive," Lowe said. "It makes you feel good that you were able to get deep in the game."
Lowe had struggled this spring, posting an 8.31 ERA and throwing only 13 innings in four starts before Saturday.
Shane Loux, an Angels minor-leaguer, started for the Angels because normal starter
Jon Garland worked in an Angels minor-league game. Loux allowed four hits and one run in three innings.
"He's got a little bit of major league experience, he's got a quick arm and he's got some movement," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "I thought he looked good."
Garland, pitching against Oakland's Triple-A team, allowed seven hits and struck out eight in seven shutout innings.
