SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) -- Jorge De La Rosa failed to take advantage of an opportunity to win a spot in Kansas City's rotation as he gave up four runs in four innings, but the Royals rallied for a 10-9 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
De La Rosa, a 26-year-old left-hander, made 23 starts last season, but is in stiff competition in spring training for the final two slots. De La Rosa faced 22 batters and nine reached base, allowing seven hits, including two home runs, and two walks. De La Rosa, who has an 8.03 earned run average in four outings, struck out five.
Rafael Furcal led off the game with a home run, while
Andre Ethier hit his sixth homer of the spring in the fourth off De La Rosa.
Hiroki Kuroda, who was making his sixth start, gave up three runs on seven hits in 5 2-3 innings, his longest outing, and left with the Dodgers leading 6-3. Kuroda, a Japan League All-Star the past three years, struck out four and walked none.
Joey Gathright led the Royals' 17-hit offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. He also stole his Cactus League-leading 10th base without being caught, scored two runs and made two sterling catches in center field.
Billy Butler also had three hits for the Royals, including a RBI-triple, to raise his average to .379.
The Royals, who have scored 103 runs in their past 14 games, scored five runs in the sixth, which included
Mark Teahen's solo homer and
Alberto Callaspo's two-run double.
Chin-Lung Hu went 3-for-5 for the Dodgers, while Furcal, who had a two-run single in the ninth, drove in three runs. Furcal went 3-for-6 to raise his average to .348.
Ramon Troncoso, the third Dodgers pitcher in the sixth, took the loss, while Royals left-hander
Ron Mahay picked up the victory.
