D-backs rally in ninth, hand Rockies fifth straight loss with three runs in 10th

DENVER (AP) -- For three straight days, the Arizona Diamondbacks had to endure one celebration after another.

First it was the fireworks and frenzy of opening day, next the Colorado Rockies raised their NL championship pennant and finally they held a ring ceremony.

The Diamondbacks ruined each one, though.

Mark Reynolds hit a two-run homer in the ninth and Stephen Drew went deep in Arizona's three-run 10th inning, leading the Diamondbacks to a 5-2 win over Colorado on Sunday.

The Rockies received their glittering NL championship rings before the series finale but Arizona completed a three-game sweep that delivered a message after the Rockies beat the Diamondbacks in last year's NLCS.

"This sets the tone for the year, just coming here and winning three games at their place, especially after what they did to us last year," Reynolds said.

The Diamondbacks actually enjoyed all the video tributes, even if they were prominently displayed in the clips.

"It was fun to watch," Orlando Hudson said. "We're happy for them. They're a damn good team. They play great."

Reynolds' two-run drive put Arizona ahead 2-1.

And to think he was going to bunt. After Conor Jackson started the ninth with a single, Reynolds contemplated laying one down, but hit away and knocked his second homer of the year off Manny Corpas.

"It felt good to hit that ball," Reynolds said. "I put a good swing on it."

Matt Holliday tied it in the bottom half, drilling a pitch from Brandon Lyon (1-1) over the right-field fence for his first home run and RBI of the season. It was Lyon's second blown save in three chances.

Drew's second homer of the season came on a 1-0 pitch from Micah Bowie (0-1). Reynolds also had an RBI single in the 10th after the Rockies' infield let a popup by Hudson drop just over the mound. Alex Romero tacked on another run with a single, his first major league hit.

Chad Qualls worked out of a jam in the 10th to earn his first save this season. He walked the first two batters, but got Ryan Spilborghs to roll into a double play and Troy Tulowitzki to line out.

"We were a little bit dormant there for a while," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "We've been resilient. That was one of our strongest traits last year."

One of Colorado's strongest attributes last year was its potent offense. So far, the Rockies have struggled, scoring two runs or less in five of six games.

"Hopefully, this is as worse as it gets," said Tulowitzki, who broke out of an 0-for-18 slump with two hits. "Not too many positives coming out of losing. Hopefully, this is our low point and we don't experience this again."

All the festivities may have been a distraction for the Rockies, who have lost five straight. At least Garrett Atkins is hoping so.

"It's going to throw some people off," Atkins said. "People like to get their routines down. The ceremonies and opening days throw a wrench into the routine. It will be nice to get back to it."

Colorado players trotted out to home plate to accept their NL championship rings before the game. Todd Helton, the face of the organization, got the loudest ovation.

Helton acknowledged the cheers with a simple wave of his hand. He opened up the box and just stared at the ring, which featured 69 diamonds and a purple "CR" embedded in a field of white gold.

The sleek-looking ring also had eight stones representing the NL wild-card tiebreaker win over San Diego and the seven victories in playoff sweeps of Philadelphia and the Diamondbacks.

"It's beautiful," Atkins said. "It's not too flash. I'll bring it out for special occasions."

Rookie Franklin Morales held the Diamondbacks to two hits over six innings in his first start of the year. Arizona's late rally spoiled his shot at a win.

"I thought he did a fantastic job," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "They didn't take good swings at him. There's still a lot of work to do to polish him up."

Edgar Gonzalez lasted five innings for the Diamondbacks, giving up just one run and six hits. He entered the game with a 9.00 career ERA against the Rockies.

Now, it's Arizona's turn to celebrate as the Diamondbacks unfurl their banner commemorating the team's NL West crown on Monday in their home opener.

"It's always nice to see," Melvin said. "But you're in a new season and you have to get past that and realize that is past history."
