SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Garrett Atkins was happy to see his big night at the plate rub off on some of his teammates.

Atkins went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and the Colorado Rockies scored seven runs in the ninth inning of a 10-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night.

"This felt good," said Atkins, who raised his average 56 points to .321. "It's a matter of sticking with it. Guys were not trying to do too much. It was contagious tonight."

Troy Tulowitzki snapped out of an 0-for-20 slump with a two-run double and Clint Barmes singled in two more in the Rockies' big ninth.

"This should give him a little breathing room," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said of Tulowitzki. "We won't have to move his room to the bottom floor [in the hotel]. We can keep him on top."

Mark Redman (2-1) allowed two runs and three hits in five innings and four Rockies relievers combined to throw four hitless innings.

"It's nice to see guys come through," said Redman, who won for the first time in his hometown. "It's the law of averages. It was bound to happen."

Chris Iannetta, who had three hits and scored two runs, doubled in Atkins to put Colorado in front 3-2 in the sixth inning.

Iannetta's two-out double wound up under the bench in the Rockies bullpen. Brian Giles retrieved the ball and threw home but Atkins slid across safely.

"The rule is you have to dig it out," Giles said. "I thought we had a shot at the plate. It's part of the game. Still it was only 3-2, but then it got away from us. Colorado's a good young team, they didn't win 90 games [last year] for nothing."

Giles doubled in Josh Bard in the third and drove in Bard with a triple in the fifth for San Diego's two runs.

Justin Germano (0-1) turned in another strong start for the Padres, allowing three runs and eight hits in seven innings. He allowed just one unearned run in 13 scoreless innings over his first two outings of the year.

Game notes
Colorado had lost 10 of its last 15 games at PETCO Park, including four shutouts. ... Germano threw 27 pitches in the first inning and just 56 over the next six innings. ... Atkins' four hits tied a career high. The last time he recorded four hits was Sept. 27, 2007, at the Los Angeles Dodgers.
