Diamondbacks 9, Padres 0

PHOENIX (AP) -- Needing a double to hit for the cycle, Conor Jackson hit a drive to deep center field in the sixth inning. As he approached second base, he thought about pulling up.

Jackson thought better of it, chugging to third with his second triple of the night in Arizona's 9-0 rout of the weary San Diego Padres on Friday night.

Jackson still has never hit for the cycle at any level.

"I'm not going to lie," Jackson said with a smile. "Of course it crossed my mind."

Arizona extended its dominance of Greg Maddux (2-1), who allowed nine runs and 13 hits, one shy of his career highs in both categories. He pitched seven innings, walking three and striking out four.

After losing a 22-inning game to Colorado and arriving in Phoenix at about 4 a.m. Friday, the Padres fell behind 6-0 in the first inning.

Arizona manager Bob Melvin knew the Padres would be tired.

"Tried to jump on them early," Melvin said.

After a long night of baseball and travel, the Padres offered little resistance to Arizona starter Dan Haren (3-0), who gave up three hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out three.

"I felt better today than the last couple times out," said Haren, whose ERA dropped to 1.80. "My fastball command was good."

The Padres have now scored one run in their last 35 innings. They didn't score in the last four innings of a 10-2 loss to Colorado on Wednesday night.

Asked if fatigue had played a role in Friday night's blowout loss, San Diego manager Bud Black said, "Some people might say that, but I don't think we will. We got beat tonight. They swung the bats and Haren pitched a good game."

Maddux didn't. But that's often the case when he faces the Diamondbacks, the only NL team with a winning record against him.

Maddux entered with 349 career victories, most among active pitchers and ninth all-time. But Maddux is 2-11 with a 5.29 ERA against Arizona, and that doesn't include two losses in the 2001 NL championship series.

Friday night was more of the same. Chris Young and Eric Byrnes opened the game with singles and scored on Jackson's one-out triple.

Mark Reynolds bounced an infield single off Maddux, who was able to hold Jackson at third.

Justin Upton's RBI single made it 3-0, and after an intentional walk to load the bases, Chris Snyder cleared the bases with a double to the gap in right-center field.

It was 6-0, Arizona. One night after San Diego's staff allowed one earned run in 22 innings, Maddux had given up six in a span of eight batters.

"I never gave us a chance to win tonight," Maddux said.

Maddux has made a living with superb command, but he didn't have it against Arizona.

"I wasn't locating good, and they didn't miss nothing," he said. "It seemed like I made a lot of mistakes and they hit almost every one."

In the second, Jackson made it 7-0 on a 422-foot homer off the batter's eye in center field.

Jackson added a single in the fourth. Needing a double to complete the cycle, Jackson hit a drive off center fielder Jim Edmonds' glove in the sixth. Instead of pulling up at second, Jackson legged out his third triple of the season -- one more than he had in his first 315 major league games.

"Too bad he didn't get the cycle," Melvin said. "It might have been his fault."
