Phils win in ninth as misplay costs Giants

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- During last season's run to the playoffs the Philadelphia Phillies rallied to win a major league-best 48 games.

They're beginning to show the same type of resiliency in 2008.

Pat Burrell had two doubles and two RBIs to lead the Philadelphia Phillies past the San Francisco Giants 6-5 on Sunday for manager Charlie Manuel's 500th career victory. It was the 10th come-from-behind victory for the NL East-leading Phillies.

"We're finding ways to get it done," Burrell said. "It wasnt pretty, but we found a way to rally."

Shane Victorino had two hits and Carlos Ruiz homered for the Phillies. Philadelphia won in the bottom of the ninth when second baseman Eugenio Velez couldn't handle Geoff Jenkins' sharp grounder, allowing Ryan Howard to score from second.

"I was thinking, 'just score all the way,'" Howard said.

The Phillies took two of three from the Giants thanks to the error.

"The ball can't get by him there," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said.

Brad Lidge (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.

Lidge pitched for the fourth consecutive game and needed only five pitches to get through the inning.

"I felt fine," Lidge said. "I told [pitching coach] Rich Dubee I wanted to throw."

Keiichi Yabu (2-2) took the loss for the Giants. Yabu walked Howard and Burrell with two outs, setting up Jenkins' at-bat.

Burrell is second in the National League with 30 RBIs and has reached base in 30 straight games. His two-run double in the third inning scored Victorino and Eric Bruntlett for a 2-0 advantage.

"I'm seeing the ball well," Burrell said. "I feel like I've had some good at-bats recently."

San Francisco tied the game at 2 in the fourth on an RBI single by Jose Castillo and an RBI double by Rich Aurilia.

The Phillies eventually went ahead 4-2 on a pair of unearned runs in the fifth -- a wild pitch by Tim Lincecum, which allowed Victorino to score and a sacrifice fly by Geoff Jenkins, scoring Bruntlett.

Aurilia was 3-for-3 for the Giants with two doubles and a two-run home run off Cole Hamels in the sixth, tying the game at 4. Aurilia extended his hitting streak to seven games, going 10-of-21 over that span.

Hamels gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings.

"It was one of those games where I wasn't able to capitalize on my teammates getting me the lead," Hamels said. "I was making mistakes which they were able to take advantage of."

Lincecum entered the game with a 1.73 ERA, third-best in the NL, as well as a league-leading 0.52 road ERA. He allowed four runs, all unearned, and actually lowered his overall ERA to 1.49. Lincecum pitched six innings and allowed six hits to go along with five strikeouts and two wild pitches.

"He pitched well," Bochy said of Lincecum. "We got the bad end of a call at first base. That cost us a couple of runs. We fought hard the whole series. We were a few outs from getting a sweep."

Instead, the Giants fell to 14-18.

"We've got to put ourselves as a team in position to tighten things up," San Francisco shortstop Emmanuel Burriss said.

The Phillies have won of their last five series. Chase Utley has reached base safely in 25 straight games. Aurilia had his first career game with three extra-base hits. John Bowker recorded his first career pinch hit in the seventh inning for the Giants. The crowd of 45,110 was the eighth sellout of the season at Citizens Bank Park.
