ATLANTA (AP) -- Seattle's depleted bullpen made the Atlanta Braves' first ninth-inning comeback of 2008 look easy.

Greg Norton doubled home the tying run and then scored on Brian McCann's single, rallying the Braves over the Seattle Mariners 5-4 Saturday night.

Norton was designated for assignment by Seattle on April 30 and acquired by the bargain-hunting Braves on May 5. Facing his former teammates, Norton made good on the Braves' minimal investment -- cash or a player who still has not been named.

Norton filled in for the injured Chipper Jones as Atlanta's No. 3 hitter. He came through with two hits and a diving catch in left field but said he wasn't motivated to make a point against his former team.

"It wasn't any added incentive," Norton said. "I'm a low-key guy. I told Chipper I didn't even know that tied the game. I thought we were still down a run."

The Braves won for the first time in 30 games this season when trailing after eight innings.

"We finally didn't hit a line drive into a double play," Braves manager Bobby Cox said.

Down 4-1, Atlanta scored two runs in the eighth and twice more in the ninth.

"We were due," McCann said. "Norton got the big hit tonight. ... Hopefully it will get us started."

With All-Star closer J.J. Putz on the 15-day disabled list with a hyperextended pitching elbow and backup closer Brandon Morrow in Seattle recovering from back spasms, manager Jim Riggleman turned to Miguel Batista -- and his 6.00 ERA -- to protect a 4-3 lead in the ninth.

Batista (3-9) blew the save -- and the game -- without recording an out. A sellout crowd of 47,158, the largest of the season at Turner Field, cheered the comeback.

"I didn't do the job in the ninth," Batista said. "That's about it."

Kelly Johnson walked to open the ninth and Norton hit an RBI double to right-center. Batista loaded the bases by issuing an intentional walk to Mark Teixeira and hitting Jeff Francoeur with a pitch.

McCann followed with a broken-bat single over second baseman Jose Lopez.

"I threw it inside to him," Batista said. "He's so strong. He hit it where I wanted it, but it was in the air. It was just over [Lopez's] head."

Blaine Boyer (2-5) pitched a perfect ninth for the win.

Yuniesky Betancourt drove in three runs for Seattle, now 1-1 under Riggleman.

Batista's blown save robbed Jarrod Washburn of his first win since May 5. Washburn gave up six hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings and, backed by three unearned runs in the first inning, was in line for the victory.

"All losses are tough," Washburn said. "We found a way to lose this one."

Atlanta's Jair Jurrjens gave up only three hits and three runs, none earned, in six innings.

Omar Infante, starting at shortstop for only the third time this season, made two fielding errors in the first inning to help Seattle take a 3-0 lead.

The Braves had fill-in starters for shortstop Yunel Escobar (strained hip flexor) and third baseman Jones (strained right quadriceps). Jones pinch-hit in the eighth and had an RBI single.

Ichiro Suzuki led off the game with a single and with one out, Infante couldn't pick up a grounder by Lopez. Raul Ibanez walked to load the bases, and Suzuki scored on Jeremy Reed's sacrifice fly.

Infante mishandled Richie Sexson's grounder, again loading the bases, setting up Betancourt's two-run single.

Betancourt added an RBI single in the eighth after Manny Acosta walked Reed and Sexson.

The Braves scored in the first when Infante singled, Johnson doubled and Teixeira singled.

Ruben Gotay's first homer of the season, off Sean Green, cut the lead to 4-2 in the eighth. Gregor Blanco followed with a grounder to shortstop and Betancourt's wild throw to first skipped past Sexson and bounded down the right-field line for a three-base error.

Riggleman brought in left-hander Arthur Rhodes. Jones, in as a pinch-hitter, hit an RBI single on Rhodes' first pitch. Riggleman said he didn't want to walk Jones.

"I was trying to stay away from it, but sometimes you have to do it," Riggleman said. "He's Chipper Jones. He got a huge hit. It got them back in the ballgame."

Game notes

Mariners 3B Adrian Beltre was held out with a bruised left index finger. Miguel Cairo was the late fill-in starter. ... Riggleman said Morrow will join the team on Monday at the New York Mets. ... McCann stole second in the sixth, his first steal since June 21, 2006 -- exactly two years. The steal was such a surprise he didn't have to slide.
