Holliday's hit highlights Rockies' comeback

DENVER (AP) -- Matt Holliday was glad he got another opportunity to bat with the bases loaded. So were the Colorado Rockies.

Holliday hit a three-run double that highlighted a seventh-inning rally, sending the Rockies over the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 Saturday night.

The Rockies trailed 5-3 when Holliday hit reliever Nick Masset's first pitch off the right-field wall. Brad Hawpe followed with an RBI single.

On Friday night, Holliday popped up with the bases loaded. In his first at-bat Saturday, he stranded three more runners when he grounded out.

"I'm glad I got the chance to help the team again," Holliday said. "You don't get that many chances, and to have another chance with the bases loaded, I was excited about another opportunity. I was thankful for another shot at it."

Holliday is batting .342 with 78 RBIs.

"When you're hitting third on any team, you're hitting third for a reason," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "He's more often than not put good swings on balls, driven in big runs. It's not always the long ball."

Colorado won for the sixth time in eight games. Jay Bruce and Chris Dickerson homered and Joey Votto had three hits for the Reds.

"It was only a matter of time before their bats come alive," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "You don't want to see Holliday come up with the bases loaded late in a game."

Luis Vizcaino (1-0) won in relief of starter Aaron Cook, who allowed four runs in five-plus innings. Brian Fuentes pitched the ninth to earn his 25th save in 29 chances.

Cincinnati starter Edinson Volquez gave up three runs and six hits in six innings. The Rockies loaded the bases with one out in the seventh against reliever Mike Lincoln (1-4), and Masset came in to face Holliday.

"The bullpen has been good," Baker said. "It didn't give us what we needed tonight."

Volquez got a no-decision for the first time in six starts.

"These games happen, but I have myself to blame," Volquez said. "I threw 40 pitches in the second inning and didn't make the adjustments."

The Reds chased Cook in the sixth when Brandon Phillips, Votto and Edwin Encarnacion opened with singles for a 4-3 lead. Vizcaino came on and struck out the side to limit the damage.

"For the past two weeks he's shown up well," Hurdle said of Vizcaino. "He's in the best place he's been all season. That was a big inning for us to stop it right there."

The Rockies took a 2-1 lead in the second when Reds catcher Paul Bako threw wildly to first on Cook's bunt single, allowing Ian Stewart and Jeff Baker to score.

Stewart gave Colorado a 3-1 lead with an RBI single in the third, but the Reds came back to tie it in the fourth on Bruce's two-run single. Bruce had three RBIs.

Cook escaped a potential big inning in the first. The Reds scored a run on three singles, and with runners on first and second Encarnacion hit a line drive to Clint Barmes at shortstop, who stepped on second to double up Phillips.

"You never like to give up hits and runs, but there was a plus side," Cook said. "A lot of my misses were down. In my last three or four starts all of my misses were up and they were hitting the ball harder."
