ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers are going to make people forget about those miserable starts of the recent past if they keep playing like it is 1996 again.

• The Rangers scored five runs in the first inning and four more in the second off Indians starter Carl Pavano to sweep the three-game series.
• Marlon Byrd and Ian Kinsler each went deep with Byrd hitting a three-run homer off Pavano in the first.
• Pavano, in his first start with the Indians, allowed nine earned runs, tying a career high.
• Grady Sizemore went deep twice as part of a five-homer game for the Indians.

There was a moment of silence before the game for Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart, who was killed in a car crash early Thursday. ... Sizemore had his seventh career multihomer game. He struck out his other three at-bats. ... Rangers C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who left Wednesday night's game experiencing dizziness because of inner ear inflammation, said he felt better and hoped to be ready to play Friday. ... The Indians will show a video tribute for former pitcher and broadcaster Herb Score during pregame ceremonies before their home opener Friday. Score died in November. Score's widow, Nancy, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. ... With three noon games this weekend in Detroit, Texas is scheduled to play four day games in a row for the first time since April 1998.
