Blue Jays punish Yankees in eight-run 5th inning before Ruiz is hit in face
TORONTO -- On a day of miscues and muffed plays, one scary moment stood out.
Rookie Randy Ruiz hit an RBI single during an eight-run fifth, then was struck in the face by a pitch later in the inning as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 14-8 on Sunday.Fast Facts
• The Blue Jays split the four-game series as the Yankees lost for the second time in their last 10 games.
• Derek Jeter had three hits (2,718 in career) to put him three shy of Lou Gehrig's team record.
• Every Blue Jays' starter had a hit except Adam Lind. Every Blue Jays' starter had an RBI except Marco Scutaro.
• Sergio Mitre allowed 11 runs, the most allowed by a Yankees starter since David Wells allowed 11 in 1997.
