DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Shaun Marcum quickly started looking ahead after his worst outing of the spring.

The right-hander was hit hard in the Toronto Blue Jays' 14-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, allowing nine runs and nine hits over five innings.

"It's a good thing to get that out of the way and move on and get ready for the next start," said Marcum, scheduled to start on opening day on April 5 at Texas.

Marcum struck out two and walked two in his third spring start and second against big league batters. He pitched in one minor league game and his last scheduled start was rained out, sending him to five innings in a batting cage.

Marcum missed half of the 2008 season and all of last year recovering from elbow surgery.

"That's the first bad outing he's had all spring training," manager Cito Gaston said. "Good to have it now, not later."

Blue Jays first baseman Lyle Overbay departed with a bruised left knee after he got tangled up with Carl Crawford on a close play in the first inning. Overbay is day to day.

Evan Longoria and B.J. Upton homered for Tampa Bay. Upton and Kelly Shoppach each had two hits and three RBIs.

Kyle Phillips had three hits and four RBIs for Toronto's split-squad.

Wade Davis pitched 5 2/3 innings for Tampa Bay, allowing four runs and 10 hits. He struck out three and walked two.

    Game notes

Toronto RHP Dustin McGowan is going to have to rest for two more weeks due to fatigue in his right arm. He already has been sidelined for a week following a brief start in a Triple-A game, his first game action since July 2008, before he underwent right shoulder surgery. ... Rays 3B Evan Longoria reached as far as he could into the stands to grab Chris Lubanski's second-inning popup. SS Jason Bartlett grabbed Longoria's legs to keep him from falling over the railing. ... Toronto C John Buck left in the third inning due to an undisclosed family emergency. ... Upton forgot to bring his No. 2 jersey. He wore No. 95.
