Research Notes
How Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda shut down the Phillies:
- Relied on his fastball: Kuroda threw 75 fastballs, and 73.5 pct (75 of 102) of his pitches were fastballs, both season highs.
- When Kuroda did throw his offspeed pitches, he did so with success. The Phillies missed on five of their 12 swings against Kuroda's slider and splitter. Despite throwing just 10 offspeed pitches with two strikes, Kuroda registered three strikeouts with non-fastballs.
- Kuroda had success keeping the ball away from Phillies hitters. Fifty-four of Kuroda's 102 pitches were on the outer third of the plate or further outside, and the Phillies struck out five times on those pitches. | ||||||||||

LOS ANGELES -- Hiroki Kuroda didn't realize he had a no-hitter going until the fifth inning. It should have come as no surprise, though. He's been at his best against Philadelphia.
Kuroda took his no-hit bid into the eighth and Rod Barajas homered in his home debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who won 3-0 Monday night to move within 5 1/2 games of the Phillies in the NL wild-card race.More From ESPNLosAngeles.com
