Petco Park, San Diego, California
W: M. Cain (11-10)
L: J. Garland (13-11)
SAN DIEGO -- With four mighty swings, the San Francisco Giants tamed Petco Park and trimmed the San Diego Padres' lead in the NL West to one game.
How Matt Cain won

• Went after hitters: Cain threw 61 percent of pitches in the strike zone, his highest in 24 starts. Recorded 18 swings-and-misses, but 14 were on pitches in the zone, the most since June 14, 2008 (82 starts).
• Worked the corners: Not a single pitch was down the heart of the plate. Cain preferred the left side looking in (away to righties and in to lefties); 53 of his 116 pitches crossed that section, but that's also where he gave up four of five hits.
• Established fastball early: Cain threw 29 fast balls in the first three innings, versus nine offspeed offerings. He didn't throw a single slider until the fourth. For the rest of the game, the breakdown was 41 fast balls to 37 offspeed.
