PHOENIX -- Not even Ubaldo Jimenez could escape the Colorado Rockies' ill-timed funk.
Jimenez allowed two home runs in a game for the first time since June 6, 2008, and the Arizona Diamondbacks sent the Rockies to their third straight loss, 8-4 on Wednesday night.Hunt For October

Research Notes
How Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez was unable to hold a 4-0 lead and took the loss against Arizona:
Struggled with his fastball command:
- Of his 51 fastballs, just 23 were in the zone (45.1 pct), Jimenez's second-lowest percentage of the season.
- Jimenez especially had trouble keeping his fastball down. Just nine of Jimenez's fastballs were low, a season low 17.6 pct (season average: 34.8 pct). As a result, all seven fastballs the Diamondbacks put in play were in the air, two of which went for home runs. |
The Diamondbacks broke the MLB strikeout record Tuesday.
They now have 1,403 strikeouts this season, averaging a strikeout every 4.1 plate appearances.
That's roughly the same strikeout rate as two hitters who performed at different extremes for their careers-- Jim Thome and Dave Kingman. |
