PHILADELPHIA -- Roy Halladay spent his whole career waiting for this start, wondering what it would be like to pitch in the playoffs.
It was better than he -- or anyone else -- could have predicted.Stark, Neyer on Halladay's No-Hitter
Roy Halladay wanted to pitch in the postseason, and so he came to Philadelphia, where all he did was toss a no-hitter in his first-ever playoff game, writes Jayson Stark. Story
Only five men before 2010 have thrown two no-hitters in one calendar year or thrown a postseason no-hitter. Halladay just became the first pitcher to do both, writes Rob Neyer. Blog
History In The Making

Roy Halladay's Game 1 shutout of the Reds was historic:
• He's the first pitcher to toss a shutout in his postseason debut since Bobby Jones' one-hitter for the Mets in Game 4 of the 2000 NLDS.
• Halladay is also the second pitcher to throw a shutout in Phillies postseason history. The other was by Curt Schilling in Game 5 of the 1993 World Series. One game later, Joe Carter's famous homer won the series for the Blue Jays.

How Phillies starter Roy Halladay no-hit the Reds:
- Halladay threw a first-pitch strike to 25 of 28 (89.3 pct) of Reds hitters, the 5th-highest percentage for any starter this year who faced a minimum of 20 hitters. Only two Reds put the first pitch in play, so Halladay started ahead 0-1 to 23 of the 28 hitters he faced. No Reds hitter reached 2-0, and only one reached 2-1. No hitter reached a 3-1 count.
- The Reds hit just four balls in play out of the infield all game.
- Halladay had great command, as evidenced by his strike percentage on inside pitches and outside pitches. 78.3 pct of Halladay's outside pitches were strikes, well above his season average of 64.7 pct. On inside pitches, Halladay got strikes 73.8 pct of the time, significantly than the 63.7 pct he posted during the regular season. Eighty-eight of Halladay's 104 pitches were either inside or outside, with just 16 over the middle.
- Cincinnati had no shot on Halladay's offspeed pitches before two strikes. Twenty-one of Halladay's 66 pitches (31.8 pct) before two strikes were offspeed, above his season average of 23.8 pct. The Reds swung at 14 of the 21, missing on 12.
- Overall, the Reds missed 17 of the 25 swings they took against Halladay's offspeed pitches, including 8 of 10 against the changeup. | ||||||||||||||||||
