NEW YORK -- Joe Girardi remembers the first time he caught Mariano Rivera, before the start of the 1996 season, back when he was still a player.
"I was like, 'Who is this kid?'" Girardi recalled. "I'm like, 'Man, this kid is special.'"Girardi is the Yankees' manager now. Rivera is no longer a kid. He's still something special, though.More From ESPNNewYork.com
Proud, durable and dominant, Yanks closer Mariano Rivera didn't reach 1,000 games by accident. For Mo, it's good night -- not good luck, Ian O'Connor writes. Story

Game notes
Keough tossed a complete game in his next start, a 6-1 win over Milwaukee on Sept. 5, 1979. ... Toronto caught Granderson asleep at second base in the first inning. Bautista made a diving grab in right and chased Teixeira back with a throw to first. Granderson was still at third, so Juan Rivera threw to second for the rare 9-3-6 double play. ... Yankees setup man Rafael Soriano could be out two months after a visit Wednesday with Dr. James Andrews confirmed he has an inflamed ligament in his right elbow, GM Brian Cashman said.

Research Notes
From Elias: Mariano Rivera has now appeared in 1,000 games in his career. He is the 15th pitcher all-time to appear in 1,000 games and the first to reach the total with one team.
FROM ELIAS
Among active pitchers, the pitcher whose team has the best winning percentage when he pitches (minimum 500 appearances) is Mariano Rivera's .850. Joe Nathan's teams rank 2nd (.793).
The all-time leader among those retired is Billy Wagner (.780), which Rivera will almost certainly surpass when he retires.

The Yankees were one out from defeat, but got a hit to tie from Curtis Granderson, and a hit to win from Mark Teixeira to win via walk-off Tuesday night.
It's the first time the Yankees went "hit to tie, followed by hit to win" in consecutive plate appearances when down to their last out since August 27, 2005. That day, they ralled from 7-3 down in the bottom of the 9th to win against the Royals, tying on a two-out RBI double by Gary Sheffield and winning on a single by Alex Rodriguez.
