NEW YORK -- Justin Turner saw sidearmer Brad Ziegler's pitch coming right for him, so he dug in.
Turner took one for the team, getting hit by a pitch with two outs in the 13th inning to force in the winning run and the New York Mets ended the Oakland Athletics' six-game winning streak, 3-2 Wednesday night.Mets blog

Research Notes
Wednesday's HBP of Justin Turner was only the second game-ending HBP to occur in interleague play. The other occurred in its inaugural year. Ricky Bottalico of the Phillies hit Boston's Troy O'Leary in B10 on June 16, 1997. |
The last bases-loaded HBP to win a game in extra innings was also issued by an Oakland pitcher. On July 19, 2008, Lenny DiNardo hit then-Yankee Jose Molina in B12. The last game-winning HBP from the 13th inning onward was issued to a Met. That was on April 23, 1992, when Daryl Boston got plunked by Juan Agosto of the Cardinals. |
Both starters in today's game (Gio Gonzalez, R.A. Dickey) pitched at least 7 innings with four hits or less, one run or less, and eight strikeouts or more. It's only the second game in the majors this season where that's happened. The other was on May 10 between Ian Kennedy (ARI) and Tim Lincecum (SF). Neither of them got a decision either. |
Jose Reyes is the 9th player in Live Ball Era (since 1920) with 13+ triples within teams first 74 games.
Only 3 players have done it since WWII ended in 1945: Rod Carew (1977), Curtis Granderson (2007) and now Reyes. |
