Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
W: D. Holland (9-4)
L: N. Blackburn (7-7)
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Three in the first, three in the second, three in the third -- and then the Texas Rangers really got going.
By the time they stopped they had the biggest offensive night in baseball this season and accomplished a feat only done two other times in the last 111 years en route to a 20-6 defeat of the Minnesota Twins on Monday night.Texas became just the third team to put up at least three runs in each of the first five innings as the Rangers added five in the fourth and four in the fifth. That'll Do It
For the most part, baseball games last nine innings, but when a team puts up 18 runs in the first five -- like the Rangers did Monday -- it usually doesn't take the other four to decide the outcome.

Game notes
It was the 14th straight season in which a team has scored 20 runs in a game, according to STATS LLC. ... The Rangers rotation has been remarkably healthy, one reason the team has surged into the lead in the AL West. Texas already has three 10-game winners in the rotation, and the Rangers have used only six starters this season, tied for fewest in the majors. "That (good health for the starters) is the key right there," manager Ron Washington said. ...CF and leadoff man Ben Revere wasn't in the starting lineup after having played in 48 consecutive games since being recalled from Triple-A Rochester on June 2. Jason Repko made his fourth start in CF and hit leadoff for the first time in 2011. Revere was 7-for-47 (.149) during a four-game series against Detroit, dropping his batting average to .249. ...The Rangers took batting practice in the indoor cages to avoid the 102-degree heat, but the Twins hit on the field, with the starters going first to get off the field as fast as possible.

Research Notes
From Elias: The Rangers were shut out Sunday the game before scoring 20 runs Monday. The last team to be shut out the game before scoring 20 runs was the Orioles, September 27-28, 2000. They are the 4th team in the last 50 seasons to do it. The 2 others (along with the Orioles) were the Cubs May 16-17, 1979 and the Cubs May 19-20, 1967. |
The Rangers now have seven players with at least three hits in Monday's game, the most in franchise history. The seven players with three hits matches the most by any team in the Live Ball Era, done eight times previously. The last team to do it was the Reds, May 19, 1999 at Colorado. |
This is the 3rd time in the Live Ball Era the Twins/Senators franchise has allowed 20+ runs and 25+ hits. The other games were in August 12, 1953 and August 7, 1923, when the team was the Washington Senators. The 27 hits are the 2nd-most allowed in the Live Ball Era the Twins/Senators franchise. The most is 28 hits, came in the August 12, 1953 game. |
From Elias:
The Rangers have scored at least 3 runs in each of the first five innings so far against the Twins.
They are just the third team since 1900 to score at least 3 runs in each of the first five innings of a game.
The others were the Athletics on September 29, 1991 against the Rangers and the Phillies on July 13, 1900 at the Pirates. |
