W: J. Verlander (5-1)
L: C. Morton (2-4)
DETROIT -- Two outs were all that separated Justin Verlander from yet another rare achievement -- and an exclusive club that includes Cy Young, Nolan Ryan and only three other pitchers.
With the crowd on its feet in anticipation of Verlander's third no-hitter, the Detroit ace threw a sharp breaking ball, just off the outside corner. Josh Harrison stuck his bat out and flicked a soft line drive agonizingly toward center field.More from ESPN.com
If Justin Verlander had pulled off his third no-hitter, he would have joined a very select group of players with more than two career no-nos -- many of whom Verlander is destined to surpass, writes Christina Kahrl. Sweetspot

Research Notes
From Elias: Justin Verlander: 2nd career shutout in which he had 12 or more strikeouts and allowed 1 hit or fewer.
The only other Tigers pitcher with such a shutout is Hall of Famer Jim Bunning, who had one (a no-hitter with 12 K) in 1958 against the Red Sox. |
