BALTIMORE -- It's the time of year when milestones are far less important than victories, so for Alex Rodriguez, the significance of his 300th home run with the Yankees was solely that it helped New York regain sole possession of first place in the AL East.
Homers by Rodriguez, Russell Martin and Steve Pearce provided New York with a seven-run cushion in the fifth inning, and the Yankees held on to beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-5 on Friday night.More Yankees-Orioles Coverage
Alex Rodriguez wants the Yankees' offense to score at least six runs per game, just as it did in Friday night's key victory against the Orioles, writes Andrew Marchand. Story

|---|---|
| Babe Ruth | 659 |

Research Notes
Alex Rodriguez: 6th player to hit 300 home runs for Yankees; he joins Babe Ruth (659), Mickey Mantle (536), Lou Gehrig (493), Joe DiMaggio (361) and Yogi Berra (358). The Yankees have had 6 players with 300 HR, one more than the teams with the next-most (braves and Red Sox have 5). |
Russell Martin's HR made him 3-for-7 with 2 HR against left-handed pitching in his last 3 games.
That's notable because prior to that, he was 3-for-34 with 1 HR vs lefties in a stretch that started July 31. |
