Kurkjian: Royals 'had to win this game'

Tim Kurkjian says it was crucial that the Royals beat the Astros and evened the series up in Game 2 of the ALDS.

On the ropes not only in the game, but the series, the Royals rallied for a 5-4 victory to even the ALDS against the Astros at a game each. Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez had sixth-inning RBIs to tie it and Ben Zobrist had the go-ahead hit in the seventh. The Royals bullpen went three scoreless innings.

Cecil out for rest of the postseason

Toronto will be without LHP Brett Cecil for the rest of the postseason after he tore a left calf muscle during the Jays’ loss to Texas in Game 2 of the ALDS. Manager Josh Gibbons said of Cecil (2.48 ERA in 63 appearance this season): “He’s got a pretty significant tear in his calf."

Colby Rasmus stays hot and Scott Kazmir carries a lead into the sixth inning. But the Houston bullpen can't maintain it, and the Astros fall 5-4 to the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. This ALDS is tied at 1-1 heading back to Houston.

Royals even ALDS series at 1

Kansas City thrilled the home crowd by scoring 4 unanswered runs, ending with a Ben Zobrist RBI single in the 7th to give the Royals the lead and a 5-4 win over Houston. Game 3 will be Sunday in Texas. Box score
