Brewers manager Ken Macha said Sunday it's "looking dim" that Hoffman will be ready for the season opener because of a strained right oblique. He felt the injury a day after pitching a scoreless sixth inning in a 5-1 victory over Kansas City on March 13.
Macha said the Milwaukee training staff expects Hoffman to be out another week. After that, he'd need to pitch two bullpen sessions before facing live hitters.
Milwaukee opens the regular season April 7 in San Francisco. Hoffman, the major league career saves leader with 554, signed a one-year, $6 million contract with the Brewers in the offseason.
