Lyon has frayed elbow ligament, according to the team
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates are deciding what to do after determining reliever Brandon Lyon, acquired this week from the Red Sox, has a frayed ligament in his right elbow.
Lyon missed both games of the Pirates-Reds series this week in Cincinnati to undergo medical tests in Pittsburgh.
The Pirates were told by the Red Sox there was no problem with Lyon's arm when the trade was made Tuesday. If the Pirates decide Lyon is not healthy enough to complete the trade, they could seek another player.
Lyon is 4-5 with a 3.93 ERA and nine saves in 42 relief appearances. He was claimed by the Red Sox off waivers from the Blue Jays last winter.
The Pirates acquired Lyon and minor league pitcher Anastacio Martinez from the Red Sox for left-hander Scott Sauerbeck and minor league reliever Mike Gonzalez and cash.
