Lee set Florida record with 315 straight games
Florida Marlins: First baseman Derrek Lee was held out of the starting lineup Tuesday night because of a sore right shoulder, ending his team-record streak of playing in 315 consecutive games is over.
Lee partially dislocated his shoulder on a fielding play Monday night against Arizona. He said he hopes to return to the lineup Friday after sitting out two games.
The injury came with Lee 15 seasons away from breaking Cal Ripken's record of 2,632 consecutive games.
"I almost got Cal," Lee said with a smile. "What he did is incredible -- not to have anything happen over that period of time."
The Marlins beat Arizona 2-1 Tuesday.
Baltimore Orioles : The Orioles placed first baseman B.J. Surhoff on the 15-day list with a strained left quadriceps muscle. The move is retroactive to July 24.
Baltimore recalled infielder Jose Leon from Triple-A Ottawa to fill Surhoff's roster spot.
Surhoff, who is batting .337 with four homers and 34 RBI, has missed three straight games because of the injury. He strained the leg July 9 in Seattle and missed six games. He aggravated the injury last week.
Leon began the season on the roster before being optioned to Ottawa on April 5. He was recalled April 23 and optioned back May 18. He averaged .190 in 21 at-bats in two stints with the Orioles.
Montreal Expos: Catcher Michael Barrett was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right hip flexor. The move was retroactive to Sunday.
Barrett was injured while batting in Saturday's 15-4 loss to Atlanta.
Though he was hitting just .207 (41-for-198) this season, Barrett was 17-for-51 (.333) with four homers and 15 RBI in July.
"It's frustrating," Barrett said. "I don't feel that bad. I didn't think I needed to go on the disabled list."
He has nine doubles, one triple, nine homers and 26 RBI in 61 games.
Right-hander Roy Corcoran's contract was purchased from Double-A Harrisburg. Corcoran, who pitched for Louisiana State before signing with Montreal as a minor league free agent in 2001, was 1-1 with three saves and a 0.38 ERA in 14 relief appearances with Harrisburg.
Tampa Bay Devil Rays: Second baseman Marlon Anderson began serving a three-game suspension for his role in a bench-clearing brawl against the Pittsburgh Pirates in June.
Anderson appealed the suspension, but only the fine was reduced. It had been $1,500. He ended up with a $1,000 fine.
Anderson and Pittsburgh's Jason Kendall wrestled after Anderson was hit by a pitch June 13th. Kendall also was suspended for three games.
On Tuesday night, Tampa Bay started a three-game series at Toronto.
St. Louis Cardinals: Infielder Miguel Cairo was activated from the 15-day disabled list. Cairo missed 35 games after breaking a bone on the little finger of his left hand when he was hit by a pitch on June 17.
He played three games with Triple-A Memphis on a rehab assignment over the weekend. He was hitting .255 with 11 doubles, two homers and 15 RBI in 55 games with St. Louis when he was injured.
Infielder Wilson Delgado was outrighted to Memphis. Delgado hit .169 (13-for-77) with three doubles and three RBI in 43 games.
Toronto Blue Jays: The Blue Jays activated infielder Dave Berg from the 15-day disabled list and optioned infielder Howie Clark to Triple-A Syracuse.
Berg was sidelined since July 1 with fatigue. He would sometimes get exhausted after taking only 10 groundballs. Toronto manager Carlos Tosca said every test performed on Berg has come up negative.
Berg, 32, hit .250 in a six-game rehab stint at Syracuse.
Clark has hit .354 in 28 games with Toronto this season.
