Ayala to have reconstructive surgery on elbow
VIERA, Fla. -- The World Baseball Classic claimed one of the Washington Nationals' most reliable setup men.
Luis Ayala injured his right elbow in the ninth inning of Mexico's 2-1 victory over the United States in Thursday's World Baseball Classic contest and will miss the entire 2006 season.
Ayala was diagnosed with an acute ulnar collateral ligament sprain in his elbow and will undergo reconstructive surgery within the next two weeks.
The 28-year-old was 8-7 with a 2.66 ERA for the Nationals last season. He appeared in 81 games for the Montreal Expos in 2004.
