Bobcats acquire Nuggets' 20th pick in NBA draft
The Charlotte Bobcats are so enamored by the depth of Thursday's draft that they sought out a way to get a second pick to fill two needs for a guard and a big man.
The Denver Nuggets were willing, trading their 20th pick to Charlotte for a future protected first-round pick.
In making the deal, the Bobcats now have the Nos. 9 and 20 selections in the first round.
New Charlotte coach Larry Brown told ESPN.com Wednesday night that after looking at the depth of their draft board from Nos. 1-25 he told president Michael Jordan that he needed another pick. Jordan said to go get one. So, they found a willing partner in Denver, which wasn't thrilled with its choices at No. 20.
The Nuggets now don't have a selection in the draft.
Brown said the Bobcats expect injured forwards Adam Morrison and Sean May back next season and hope to sign center Emeka Okafor. He said at No. 9 the Bobcats' top choices -- UCLA guard Russell Westbrook and center Kevin Love -- will likely be gone.
That means Charlotte will focus on a list of four players with the ninth pick: Italy's Danilo Gallinari, West Virginia's Joe Alexander, Texas' D.J. Augustin and LSU's Anthony Randolph. Gallinari and Alexander could be gone at No. 6 and 8, respectively. If that's the case, then the Bobcats will likely choose between Augustin and Randolph.
At No. 20, the Bobcats have a longer list that will include: Stanford's Robin Lopez, Congo's Serge Ibaka, Syracuse's Donte Greene, Florida's Marreese Speights, Nevada's JaVale McGee and Rider's Ryan Thompson. Lopez is the one player who will likely be gone at No. 20.
The Bobcats were also impressed with Georgetown center Roy Hibbert when he worked out for the team earlier this month. Hibbert is expected to go late in the first round.
