Hornets down to nine players

New Orleans Hornets reserve Chris Andersen will miss at least five games after undergoing minor surgery on his infected right elbow.

Andersen split open his elbow during a Feb. 28 loss at the Dallas Mavericks
and required two stitches, but had been playing through the injury
until he missed Monday night's loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

"For two weeks we've tried to keep it clean, and he was on oral antibiotics, but he kept opening it up," trainer Terry Kofler said
Tuesday.

"He opened it up real good the other night (against
Milwaukee) and came in Sunday and it was swollen."

Andersen had the elbow cleaned out on Sunday and remained in the hospital Tuesday afternoon, team spokesman Harold Kaufman said.

Andersen has averaged 10.1 points and nine rebounds during his
last eight games. His absence left the Hornets with nine players
against the Spurs. George Lynch missed his second straight game
following his mother-in-law's death.
