Wilkins to stay with Sonics
SEATTLE -- The Seattle SuperSonics matched the offer sheet tendered to swingman Damien Wilkins by the Minnesota Timberwolves, Sonics general manager Rick Sund announced Wednesday.
Terms were not disclosed.
Wilkins, 25, signed the offer sheet last Thursday as a restricted free agent and the SuperSonics had seven days to match.
The 6-foot-5 Wilkins averaged 6.3 points and 2.3 rebounds in just under 18 minutes per game as a rookie last season. He averaged 5.6 points and 2.6 rebounds in seven playoff games for Seattle, which lost to eventual champion San Antonio in the Western Conference semifinals.
"Due to his outstanding work ethic in his rookie season, Damien earned the respect of our players, coaches and fans," Sund said. "He improved as much in one season as any player we can remember and we expect that trend to continue. We believe Damien will be a part of our young, talented core for years to come."
The son of former NBA player Gerald Wilkins, Damien Wilkens signed with Seattle as an undrafted rookie free agent last October.
