ESPN.com contributor Shirley cut by Timberwolves
Shirley, 6-10, played in two preseason games for a total of eight minutes. The three-year NBA veteran signed with the Wolves on Oct. 2. The ESPN.com contributor averaged 7.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and just under 24 minutes in five games with the Wolves' Las Vegas Summer League team.
When not writing this journal, searching for original music, being mistaken for a Heisman winner, playing with a mostly Chinese ABA team, trying to get his sitcom on air, planning his next foray from Kansas or just pondering his fate, Paul Shirley has been trying to get back in the NBA. Here's his journey.
Ellis, a 6-foot-4 rookie, played 15 minutes in three preseason games. Originally signed by the Wolves on Oct. 2, Ellis appeared in five games for Minnesota's entry in the Las Vegas Summer League, averaging 8.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 24.6 minutes per game.
Shirley's journal chronicling his basketball career appeared regularly at ESPN.com. In this entry in September, he talked about putting his writing career on hold to devote his time to playing in the NBA.
"If writing for ESPN.com will cause management types to think I'm not serious about playing basketball, I may need to think about stopping. My basketball shelf life is a short one; I wouldn't want to squander it because I felt the need to complain to a few hundred thousand of my closest friends every now and then. I can always write. [Barring significant head trauma or a future meth habit,]" the 28-year-old said.
