Still working to terminate their failed partnership with Billy Donovan, the Orlando Magic might not have an easy time reeling in their second choice as coach, Stan Van Gundy.

The Orlando Sentinel reported on Tuesday night that the Magic have offered their head coaching job to Van Gundy, but the coach may have difficulty extracting himself from his own contract complications.

Van Gundy is under contract with the Miami Heat as a consultant for one more season. He was replaced as coach midway through the 2005-06 season by team president Pat Riley, who led the team to their only championship.

Riley may ask for compensation, most likely in the form of draft picks, to let Van Gundy coach in the same division, the Southeast, as Miami.

Even if those details can be worked out, however, the Magic could still be left standing at the altar again. Van Gundy has interviewed twice with the Sacramento Kings -- most recently on Saturday -- and could be offered that coaching position. In the past he has said that he has "great interest" in the Orlando job, but that was before the Magic's latest soap opera involving Donovan.

Sources have told ESPN.com that the Magic wanted to act quickly to try to hire Van Gundy and mitigate the public relations damage done by Donovan asking out of his five-year contract. That likely indicates that negotiations with Riley and the Heat won't be as daunting as those with the former Florida coach.

Reached at his home Tuesday night by The Associated Press, Van Gundy declined comment when asked if either the Magic or Kings had made him any contract offers. Van Gundy stepped down as Heat coach in December 2005, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Riley was traveling and unavailable for comment, according to a Heat official.
