Raptors sign free agent Baston to 2-year, $3.8M deal

The Toronto Raptors signed free agent Maceo Baston to an offer sheet on Wednesday, his agent Mark Bartlestein told ESPN Insider Chad Ford.

The Raptors used the bi-annual exception to ink the former Pacer, and the deal is worth roughly $3.8 million over two years. The Pacers have seven days to match the offer or Baston would return to the Raptors.

Toronto also made its deal with former Miami guard Jason Kapono official. He agreed to a multiyear deal with the Raptors on July 1, the first day of free agency. Deals couldn't become official until the league's moratorium period ended Wednesday.

"Jason is an ideal fit for our system and for our locker room," general manager Bryan Colangelo said in a statement. "We anticipate he will contribute significantly to our team in a variety of ways."

Kapono averaged 10.9 points and 2.7 rebounds with the Miami Heat last season and is best known for his 3-point shooting. The 26-year-old forward shot an NBA-best 51.4 percent from behind the arc last season, fourth-best in league history.

Kapono also won the 3-point shooting competition during All-Star weekend in Las Vegas.

Financial terms were not released, though Kapono was expected to sign for the full mid-level exception, which was set Tuesday at $5.36 million per season.

Baston had been a star in Europe for years playing on Euroleague powerhouse Maccabi Tel Aviv. He joined the Pacers last season but played sparingly averaging 2.1 points in just 8.9 minutes per game.

The move by the Raptors continues their trend of favoring international players and Americans who have experience playing overseas. In the last two years the team also has added Andrea Bargnani, Jorge Garbajosa, Anthony Parker, Jose Calderon, Rasho Nesterovic, Carlos Delfino and Uros Slokar to the roster.
