Kings assistant coach Person to have second interview with Bulls
A person familiar with the search, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the search is ongoing, said Person was flying to Chicago on Tuesday. The interview would happen either later Tuesday night or Wednesday.
Person joined the Kings last year after spending the previous two as an assistant with Indiana, where he played six of his 13 NBA seasons.
Person might be a long shot for a job that numerous reports have going to Doug Collins, but "The Rifleman" was known to hit a few during a career in which he averaged 14.7 points and shot 36.2 percent from 3-point range.
The Bulls and Collins, who coached a young Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen in the late 1980s before the dynasty took off, acknowledged last week having discussions and said there would be more talks once Collins' broadcast duties with TNT ended. That happened when the Los Angeles Lakers eliminated the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference finals on Thursday.
The Chicago Sun-Times, citing an unidentified source, reported this week that an announcement could come as soon as Tuesday, with the Chicago Tribune saying Collins was the front-runner and that the search would end this week. But Chicago radio station WSCR-AM reported Tuesday that chairman Jerry Reinsdorf wants more time to decide whether to hire his friend.
Collins, who at times has described Reinsdorf as being a father-figure, has said he understands Reinsdorf taking his time to make a final decision. Collins has made it clear to the Bulls and others, including the one-time pursuer Phoenix Suns, that the Chicago job is the only position he's interested in.
It's possible one of the many candidates Paxson has interviewed could wind up as an assistant and an heir apparent to the new coach.
