Afflalo nets 25 points, leads the way for Pistons
LAS VEGAS -- Arron Afflalo's 25 points led the Detroit Pistons to a 10-point victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, 76-66, in Sunday's Day 3 finale of the 2008 NBA Summer League Presented by EA SPORTS.
Afflalo, who scored 19 in the second half, helped carry the Pistons to victory over the Eric Gordon-less Clippers.
"I've always said that when Arron plays consistent minutes, he shoots the ball consistently," said Detroit head coach Michael Curry. "You're always glad to see everyone play well, but especially Aaron because of how much time he puts in to improve his game. He's going to be our backup 2-guard this season, so we expect him to come in and play consistent minutes each night and he'll be a good contributor for us."
The Pistons jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead in the opening quarter, but that pace slowed as the period ended with a 16-15 advantage for Detroit and both teams shooting 38.5 percent on 5-of-13 shooting.
Another hot start to a quarter for Detroit, a 14-4 run, pushed their lead up to as many as 14, but the Clippers crept back into the game to finish the half only down nine, 35-26.
Behind a strong third-period effort from Piston guard Afflalo, who scored 13 of his 19 points in the quarter, Detroit was able to extend its lead to 20, 62-42.
A pair of Brandon Heath 3-pointers in the fourth quarter helped the Clippers cut the Detroit lead to six, but the spark wasn't enough.
The Clippers were led by DeAndre Jordan's double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Next up: The Clippers will tangle with Memphis in the final game on Wednesday night, while Detroit plays in the first game on Tuesday afternoon against Milwaukee.
