Nuggets shoot past Blazers
LAS VEGAS -- The Denver Nuggets opened the third quarter on a 12-3 run and never looked back as they beat the Portland Trail Blazers 111-93, earning their second victory of the 2009 NBA Summer League presented by EA SPORTS. The Blazers have yet to net a victory after three games at the desert classic.
Ty Lawson scored a game high 26 points as Sonny Weems came off the bench with 24 points for the Nuggets. Jerryd Bayless led Portland with 19 points while Bobby Jones had 18. The Nuggets set a 2009 NBA Summer League Scoring record with 111 points, the previous high was 105 set by the D-League Select Team on Wednesday, July 15.
In the opening quarter of play, the Nuggets went on an 8-2 run and built their largest lead of the quarter to eight with 2:48 left to play in the quarter. Lawson led the Nuggets in the quarter scoring nine of the team's 22 points. The Blazers struggled in the opening quarter scoring just 16 points on 5-17 shooting (29.4 percent).
Denver opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run before the Blazers went on a 6-0 run of their own. The Blazers cut the lead to two, 34-36, however it was Nuggets who finished the quarter strong, holding a 46-40 advantage at the half.
Denver led by as many as 15 in the third, as Weems and Lawson tallied 16 of the Nuggets 34 third quarter points. The Blazers third quarter attack was led by Bayless with seven points and Pooh Jeter who dropped in six.
The Blazers cut the Nuggets fourth quarter lead to seven early in the quarter however the Nuggets continued their dominance and built their lead to as many as 18 in the final period of play.
