Spurs fight off Hawks
The San Antonio Spurs wasted an impressive first half lead and staved off an unrelenting Atlanta Hawks team to secure a 89-84 victory on the sixth day of competition at the 2010 NBA Summer League. The Hawks took a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter in the midst of an epic come back from what had been a 23-point deficit but the effort fell short.
Alonzo Gee led all scorers with 24 points in the win, while teammate Curtis Jerrells finished with 20 points. Jordan Crawford finished with a team-high 20 for Atlanta, while Trey Gilder chipped in with 15, 12 of which came during the fourth quarter come back.
The teams came out slow, staying close through the opening minutes of the game before San Antonio pulled away going on a 16-4 run between the seven minute and two minute marks to take a 23-11 lead. Atlanta answered with a run of their own, though, outscoring San Antonio 5-0 in the final two minutes of the first quarter. At the end of one, the Spurs owned a 23-16 lead despite having led by as many as 12 in the quarter.
Gee and James Gist took San Antonio's offense on their back in the second quarter, combining for 20 points in the period. While Atlanta continued to struggle, turning the ball over 16 times in the first half which led to 25 San Antonio points. Their efforts helped the Spurs stretch their lead to 16, to head into the half time break with a 52-36 advantage.
Atlanta outscored the Spurs 26-19 in the third quarter, using a combined 19 points from Jordan Crawford and Jeff Teague to go on an 8-0 run in the middle of the period to rebound from what had become a 23-point deficit.
At the end of three, Atlanta had cut the lead to nine points, and trailed the Spurs 71-62.
