Kobe Bryant
Los Angeles Lakers
Shooting Guard
Complete stats
To watch Kobe during the Lakers' wins over New Orleans and San Antonio over the weekend was to see his full value on display. The way he directs his teammates, the way he's in sync with coach Phil Jackson, the way he initiates the offense, his help defense ... it's all the subtle parts of his game that deserve mention. They've helped more than his scoring outbursts in the past.

Kevin Garnett
Boston Celtics
Power Forward
Complete stats
Don't dock KG for his two high-profile teammates. The Celtics weren't considered contenders when they had only Paul Pierce, and no one called Ray Allen the missing piece to the championship. Acquiring Garnett raised the expectations for the team -- and because of his intensity the Celts actually surpassed them this season.

Chris Paul
New Orleans Hornets
Point Guard
Complete stats
Without "Western Conference's top team" on it, Paul's résumé isn't quite as strong. Still, I love the tempo he sets for the Hornets. He has an almost innate ability to know exactly where Tyson Chandler and Peja Stojakovic are and get them the ball in the right places.

LeBron James
Cleveland Cavaliers
Small Forward
Complete stats
No other MVP candidate had to deal with the Cavaliers' multiple blows of injuries, holdouts and major trades. James did an outstanding job of making this team competitive -- but he didn't make them elite, which is what an MVP should do.

Tracy McGrady
Houston Rockets
Shooting Guard
Complete stats
This is in recognition of the Rockets' 22-game winning streak, not to mention their surprising late push for the No. 1 spot in the West. McGrady kept forcing an otherwise nondescript team into the conversation even after Yao Ming was lost for the season.
