It's New Year's Day ... with a new batch of ESPN.com NBA Power Rankings on the first morning of 2007 because the committee (of one), as you'd expect, spent New Year's Eve churning these out for you ... and with a new No. 1 to boot.

The Dallas Mavericks essentially ended the Phoenix Suns' three-week reign in the top spot Thursday with a 101-99 home victory in the No. 1 versus No. 2 showdown. Then they tacked on two more wins over the weekend -- Sunday's in Denver without sinus-infection victim Dirk Nowitzki -- to stretch their unbeaten run to 10 games, Dallas' second double-digit win streak this season.

2006-07 Power Rankings: Week 9
RANK (LAST WK) TEAM REC. COMMENT
1 (2) Mavericks 24-7 Cowboys have, what, one significant W in the Romo Era? The real title contender in town, meanwhile, rolls along with zero hoopla, even at 24-3 since that 0-4 start.
2 (1) Suns 21-8 Here's why a 15-game win streak is big no matter who Suns played: 15 teams in this league, including all five in the Atlantic, don't even have 15 wins yet.
3 (3) Spurs 23-8 If you were waiting for Pop's annual December rant about his team's lack of toughness, you got it at Christmas when he said Spurs have lost ''passion'' for D.
4 (5) Jazz 22-9 I know someone who isn't impressed with the five-game Northwest Division lead Jazz are taking into the New Year. Sloan's not afraid to tell them so, either.
5 (9) Rockets 19-12 In the event T-Mac's back has somehow been cured by that new specialist -- assuming chronic back woes can be cured -- maybe Yao's latest setback isn't a crisis.
6 (7) Wizards 17-13 Wiz fans should be thanking me for picking Redd over Arenas for East MVP of Trimester 1. We all know Arenas lives off snub fuel and he'll surely be inhaling this.
7 (8) Bulls 19-12 He might not like it, but this is why Bulls have to do what's best for them and use Gordon as a sixth man: Little Ben has scored 20 or more in 11 of his last 12 games.
8 (4) Pistons 18-11 Maybe they got away with one versus Nets, but Pistons would say things have more than evened out with narrow losses to Knicks and Pacers and Billups' getting hurt.
9 (6) Lakers 20-11 Phil has said plenty about Kwame lately, but make no mistake. Lakers need him back from Sunday's ankle sprain ASAP, only 10 games (5-5) into life without Odom.
10 (11) Pacers 17-15 Losing at home to Bobcats, right after winning in Detroit, was doubly discouraging for Indy, keeping it from going four games over .500 for the first time all season.
11 (17) Bucks 16-15 It was Redd's trimester -- you can't convince me otherwise -- but December also belonged to Mo Williams: 19.9 ppg, 6.6 apg, 5.8 rpg and 48.9-percent shooting.
12 (12) Warriors 16-16 Warriors contribute to the MIP muddle as much as anyone with three big progress-makers of their own: Ellis, Biedrins and the out-of-nowhere Matt Barnes.
13 (14) Cavaliers 17-12 Is this is a sign he's turning it up a notch? LeBron scores 30 or more in four of his final six games as a 21-year-old, after a run of seven straight games under 30.
14 (13) Nuggets 16-12 This doesn't happen every day: Camby's return from injury to team up with Iverson means Nuggets now have the top two picks from the 1996 draft in their lineup.
15 (10) Magic 18-14 Magic's darling status is gone, just like that, after they followed up a magical November (12-4) with a 6-10 mark in December, including five losses at home.
16 (19) Clippers 14-16 Funny how that works. Clips finally hook up with a couple East teams (Celts and Knicks) and suddenly have their first three-game win streak since starting 5-1.
17 (18) Timberwolves 13-15 If he's not going to be dealt away for Iverson, might as well give him the rock: Foye enters 2007 coming off his best five-game stretch so far, averaging 14.6 ppg.
18 (21) Kings 13-15 Pressing questions for 2007: Will Artest and/or Bibby last the season in Sac? And whose gold jersey will turn off more viewers: Sacramento's or Washington's?
19 (20) Raptors 13-18 Here's one Atlantic team with no need to apologize. Raps have played more road games than anyone (19) and are 6-6 w/out Bosh, compared to 1-11 last season.
20 (16) Heat 13-17 News flash: If D-Wade can't shake this wrist thing fairly soon, Shaq needn't rush back. Heat's title defense, without those two, would be over before the playoffs start.
21 (15) Trail Blazers 13-18 A 1-4 finish took some shine off Portland's surprising December, but I'm guessing Roy's return for the last six games cushions the blow somewhat. Doesn't it?
22 (22) SuperSonics 13-19 Rashard is out until February or March, true, but it wouldn't be all that surprising if Hill follows Fratello as the next coach to be ousted. Would it?
23 (25) Nets 13-18 Even without Krstic, Nets still have enough to win the Titanic . . . if Vince does more than we've seen in the past 10 games, six of them under the 20-point plateau.
24 (26) Knicks 13-20 If they remember anything fondly about a calendar year marked by two brawls -- Larry vs. Isiah and Knicks vs. Nuggets -- it'll be their 3-0 record in triple-OT games in 2006.
25 (29) Bobcats 9-21 When Carroll scores 27, Emeka rings up 22 and 25 and Stache comes back with 30 in Indy to complete a sweep of Lakers and Pacers, you can live with Kobe's 58.
26 (23) Hornets 12-18 Losing Peja, D-West and now Paul is a hideously painful run. But the deeper worry: Peja might have a season-ending back injury to go with that new contract.
27 (24) Celtics 10-19 No wins in five games since losing Pierce. No time to adjust to the old leather ball before Monday night's game in Portland. Not a very happy New Year, in other words.
28 (27) Grizzlies 7-25 What a difference a year (and a healthy Pau) makes. Fratello had the NBA's fourth-best record on Dec. 26, 2005, at 16-9. Just 367 days later, Grizz had a new coach.
29 (30) 76ers 8-22 This seven-game trip out West comes at a good time for Sixers fans rooting for extra ping-pong balls in the lottery. Not an easy place to find post-trade momentum.
30 (28) Hawks 9-20 Hawks' 4-1 start suddenly looks as meaningful as Philly's 3-0 launch. They've lost five in a row by double digits since blowing a 21-point lead at home to Utah on Dec. 20.
