Mavs clinch victory with 28-12 second-quarter run

10/5/2003

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- The Utah jazz rallied for a 90-85 victory
over local favorite Eduardo Najera and the Dallas Mavericks in an
exhibition game on Sunday.

Najera, the only Mexican in the NBA, was heartily cheered as he
was introduced during pregame festivities. He made four of his
first five shots and finished with eight points -- all in the first
half, but he fouled out with just over five minutes to play.

The Jazz committed nine turnovers in the third quarter and
trailed 68-59 entering the fourth before mounting a comeback with
the help of several Dallas fouls.

Raul Lopez and Aleksandar Pavlovic scored 10 points each to lead
the Jazz. Antawn Jamison scored 16 points and Dirk Nowitski had 16
points and six rebounds for the Mavericks.

The lead changed hands five times in the first half before
Dallas went up 35-33 at 5:37 in the second quarter on Josh Howard's
jump shot.

It was the 16th NBA game played in Mexico City but the first
since 2000. All but one have been preseason games.
