Wilkens takes over atop NBA loss list

TORONTO (AP) -- Lenny Wilkens set the NBA record for most career coaching losses with one of the Raptors' most lopsided defeats of the season.

    NBA Loss Leaders (x-active)
    Rank Coach Losses
    1. x-Lenny Wilkens 1,107
    2. Bill Fitch 1,106
    3. Dick Motta 1,017
    4. Gene Shue 861
    5. x-Don Nelson 825
    6. Jack Ramsay 783
    7. Cotton Fitzsimmons 775
    8. x-Larry Brown 681
    9. Kevin Loughery 662
    10. John MacLeod 657

Wilkens dropped his 1,107th game Friday night as Malik Rose scored 23 points to lead the San Antonio Spurs past the Toronto Raptors 124-98.

Wilkens, already the winningest coach in league history with 1,292 victories, surpassed Bill Fitch's record.

Wilkens, in his 30th year as an NBA coach, could have just seven games remaining in his Hall of Fame career. The 65-year-old is widely expected to be fired at the end of the season.

"If we continue to play like this would you expect him back?'' Vince Carter said.

Wilkens joked that he wanted to win so the media would keep following him. More media than usual traveled to Detroit on Wednesday expecting Wilkens to pass Fitch, but the Raptors beat the Pistons.

"I wanted to make you keep following me on the road. It was kind of fun to see all you guys down in Detroit. Boy, that was really good,'' Wilkens said.

Stephen Jackson added 22 points for the Spurs, who shot 77.1 percent in the first half.

"We couldn't guard anybody,'' Wilkens said.

San Antonio has won eight straight overall and 16 of 17 on the road.

    Malik Rose

Malik Rose and the Spurs are one game behind Dallas for the NBA's best record.

Carter scored a team-high 17 points for the lottery-bound Raptors, who were booed throughout. The loudest boos came after the Raptors failed to score their 100th point, which would have meant free pizza for the crowd.

Tim Duncan had 13 points and eight rebounds before leaving the game late in the first half with a mildly sprained right ankle. A Spurs spokesman said Duncan would have played in the second half if the game wasn't a blowout.

The Spurs, a half-game behind Dallas for the best record in the NBA, made 15 straight shots in the second quarter and finished the period 16-of-18.

"We're just on fire,'' Tony Parker said.

Bruce Bowen made consecutive wide open 3-pointers during a 17-2 run in the first quarter. Rose's jumper and two layups capped a 17-2 run in the second, giving San Antonio a 30-point lead with 1:47 left in the first half.

Jackson's 3-pointer early in the fourth gave San Antonio a 32-point lead -- its biggest of the game.

Rose finished 10-for-13 from the field. He also had nine rebounds.

Spurs' coach Gregg Popovich said Wilkens doesn't deserve criticism.

"He's somebody I've watched my whole life. Some of the stuff we ran I actually stole from him,'' Popovich said. "It doesn't diminish who he is or what he's done.''

    Game notes
