EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Paul Pierce scored 30 points, had
10 rebounds and made all 18 free-throws Friday night to lead Boston
Celtics to their first preseason win, 95-90 over the New Jersey
Nets.

Antoine Walker had 19, Mike James 13 and Marcus Banks 11 for the
Celtics (1-4).

Kenyon Martin had 15 for the Nets, who had their first loss
after three preseason wins. Jason Kidd, seeing his first exhibition
action, scored 13 points and had eight assists. Kerry Kittles and
Rodney Rogers each scored 11. Alonzo Mourning had 10 rebounds to go
along with eight points.

Boston shot only 34 percent from the field but the Celtics hit
35 of 42 from the free-throw line and were especially effective in
the fourth quarter.

Boston went on a 20-2 run to take an 88-77 lead with 3:42
remaining. Pierce paced the run with 10 points and all but two came
on free throws. Walker contributed five points with a layup and
3-pointer from 31 feet out.

New Jersey managed to cut the deficit to three when Damone Brown
hit a 3-pointer with 10.1 seconds remaining. Banks sealed it with a
pair of free throws.
