    Payton has six assists

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) -- Paul Pierce scored 18 points to lead Boston over the Chicago Bulls 104-74 Tuesday night in Doc Rivers' coaching debut for the Celtics.

Boston's Ricky Davis added 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting in the preseason opener for both teams. Gary Payton, another new Celtic, had six assists.

Pierce shot 7-of-11 from the field and 3-of-4 from 3-point range.

The Bulls were led by reserve Tommy Smith's 13 points, and rookie Loul Deng had seven points and five rebounds.

The Bulls scored just 13 points in the second quarter, and Boston led 57-36 at halftime.

Raef LaFrentz scored 13 points and Marcus Banks had 10 for the Celtics, who led by as many as 38 in the fourth quarter.

Rivers was hired by the Celtics in April. He went 171-168 in five seasons with Orlando before being fired in November when the Magic opened the season with one win and 10 consecutive losses.
